• Ruddy sheds light on the Prince of Darkness

Craig Ruddy was thrust into the limelight back in 2004 when he won both the Archibald Prize and the People’s Choice Award for his beautifully crafted portrait of actor David Gulpilil.

With an artistic style that is instantly recognisable and always popular, it's no suprise that he has just picked up the 2010 People's Choice award for his portrait of Aboriginal writer/director Warwick Thornton. The backlit work is a dominant piece which celebrates the man known to the industry as "The Prince of Darkness", due to his signature low lighting techniques.

If you haven't visited the Archibald Prize exhibition yet, time is of the essence. It runs until 30 May at the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney.
