Jason Benjamin

Jason Benjamin is fast becoming one of Australia's most respected and popular artists. Since 1990, Benjamin has held fifteen solo exhibitions throughout Australia and overseas, and has been included in numerous group shows. His works figure in prestigious collections held by Art Bank, the National Portrait Gallery, and Macquarie Bank. Benjamin's talent for landscape painting has been recognised and awarded numerous times, including the King's School Art Prize and the Archibald 'Packers' Prize' in 2005. The magazine "Australian Art Collector" has short listed Jason Benjamin in its 'Top 50 Most Collectable Australian Artists' alongside the critically acclaimed names of Blackman, Olsen, Whitley, Boyd and Nolan.

Benjamin's ambiguous titles such as 'You Were Gone' and 'I Can't Let Go' lend an elusive sense of narrative to the landscape. His depictions of Australian skies capture an expansiveness, reminiscent of English artist John Constable's passionately detailed evocation of clouds. Far from being flat backdrops, Benjamin's skies dramatise finite living moments-the last, lingering minutes of daylight or the restless yawning heat of midday.

Benjamins evocative works have often been described as 'modern neoclassical pieces'. Whether his choice of subject is a sweeping landscape, a floral composition or a beautiful nude, Benjamins paintings have a mysterious, haunting edge to them. They possess a unique cinematic quality, with accompanying titles that conjure up an alternative viewpoint. His work shows a sensitive understanding of form and light, possessing subtle tonalities within these strong compositions.

Benjamin's beautifully represented landscapes and unique talent combine to make his works at once highly collectable, and of immediate and deep appeal. Benjamin was included in the most recent edition of the fifty most collectable artists for 2009 in Art Collector Magazine.
