David Bromley
Born in Sheffield, England, in 1960, David Bromley came to Australia as a small child. He is currently based in Adelaide and has had exhibitions in Sydney, Brisbane, Canberra, Hobart and Adelaide since the mid-1980s. He has had portraits hung in the Archibald prize, Art Gallery of New South Wales in 1999 and 2001, and is represented in state gallery collections and numerous corporate and private collections throughout Australia.
Bromley's work concentrates on two seemingly contrasting areas - the Boys Own or children's/adolescents adventure series and the female nude. Bromley's work is heavily influenced by artists such as Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol and Glen Baxter and his love of Warhols work (in particular his portrait and figure work) can be particularly seen in his work on the female nude. His representation of the female form is intended to parallel how females are presented in the sexy, contemporary fashion and photographic magazines. On the other hand, the characters and style of childhood books such as the once popular Boys Own Annuals are also inspirational. Working on two different perspectives he feels helps breathe new life into each approach.
The year 2000 brought a stream of strong interest from overseas - culminating in exhibitions in Singapore, Paris, Tokyo and London. A London exhibition resulted in an offer of representation in New York. David has been a finalist in the Archibald Prize in 2001, 2000 and 1999, and continues to be in demand as a portraitist. He has also been listed twice as one of the 50 most collectible artists in Australia by Australian Art Collector magazine.
